Rebel Musics Volume 2

Rebel Musics by Fischlin Daniel Fischlin, Rebel Musics Volume 2 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Rebel Musics Volume 2 books, When it was first published in 2003, Rebel Musics sought to explore how musical activism resonates as resistance to the dominant culture, and how political action through music increases the potential for people to determine their own fate. If anything, these issues seem to be even more pressing today. Rebel Musics offers a fascinating journey into a rich, complex world where music and politics unite, and where rebel musicians are mobilizing for political change, resistance, and social justice. Daniel Fischlin and Ajay Heble cover a wide range of artists, genres, and topics, including Thomas Mapfumo, Bob Marley, William Parker, Frank Zappa, Edgard Varese, Ice-T, American blues, West African drumming, hip hop, gospel, rock'n'roll cabaret, Paul Robeson, and free jazz. This book shows how rebel music is at the heart of some of the most incisive critiques of global politics. With explosive lyrics and driving rhythms, rebel musicians are helping to mobilize movements for political change and social justice, at home and around the world. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Black Rose Books, this revised and expanded edition of Rebel Musics will include all the original essays, as well as a new contribution by the editors. Rounding out the new edition will be several new pieces from artists and scholars that will continue to spark debate about these vital topics in compelling ways.

Download Rebel Music books, A volume in Critical Constructions: Studies on Education and Society Series Editor: Curry Stephenson Malott, West Chester University of Pennsylvania Arising from the street corners and underground clubs, Rebel Music: Resistance through Hip Hop and Punk, challenges standardized schooling and argues for equity, peace, and justice. Rebel Music is an important, one-of-a-kind book that takes readers through fun, radical, educational chapters examining Hip Hop and Punk songs, with each section addressing a particular social issue. Rebel Music values the experiences found in both movements as cultural capital that is de-valued in the current oppressive, standard, test-driven, rule-bound, and corporate schooling experience, making youth "just another brick in the wall." This collection is a "rebel yell" to administrators, teachers, parents, police, politicians, and counselors who demonize Hip Hop and Punk to listen up and respect youth culture. Finally, Rebel Music is a celebration of radical voices and an organizing tool for those who use music to challenge oppression.

Sounding Dissent

Rebel Musics by Stephen Millar, Sounding Dissent Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Sounding Dissent books, The signing of the Good Friday Agreement on April 10, 1998, marked the beginning of a new era of peace and stability in Northern Ireland. As the public has overwhelmingly rejected a return to the violence of the Troubles (1968-1998), loyalist and republican groups have sought other outlets to continue their struggle. Music has long been used to celebrate cultural identity in the North of Ireland: from street parades to football chants, and from folk festivals to YouTube videos, music facilitates the continuation of pre-Agreement identity narratives in a "post-conflict" era. Sounding Dissent draws on original in-depth interviews with Irish republican musicians, contemporary audiences, and former paramilitaries, as well as diverse historical and archival material, including songbooks, prison records, and newspaper articles, to understand the history of political violence in Ireland. The book examines the hagiographic potential of rebel songs to memorialize a pantheon of republican martyrs, and demonstrates how musical performance and political song not only articulate experiences and memories of oppression and violence, but play a central role in the reproduction of conflict and exclusion in times of peace.

Rebel Music In The Triumphant Empire

Rebel Musics by David Pearson, Rebel Music In The Triumphant Empire Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Rebel Music In The Triumphant Empire books, At the dawn of the 1990s, as the United States celebrated its victory in the Cold War and sole superpower status by waging war on Iraq and proclaiming democratic capitalism as the best possible society, the 1990s underground punk renaissance transformed the punk scene into a site of radical opposition to American empire. Nazi skinheads were ejected from the punk scene; apathetic attitudes were challenged; women, Latino, and LGBTQ participants asserted their identities and perspectives within punk; the scene debated the virtues of maintaining DIY purity versus venturing into the musical mainstream; and punks participated in protest movements from animal rights to stopping the execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal to shutting down the 1999 WTO meeting. Punk lyrics offered strident critiques of American empire, from its exploitation of the Third World to its warped social relations. Numerous subgenres of punk proliferated to deliver this critique, such as the blazing hardcore punk of bands like Los Crudos, propagandistic crust-punk/dis-core, grindcore and power violence with tempos over 800 beats per minute, and So-Cal punk with its combination of melody and hardcore. Musical analysis of each of these styles and the expressive efficacy of numerous bands reveals that punk is not merely simplistic three-chord rock music, but a genre that is constantly revolutionizing itself in which nuances of guitar riffs, vocal timbres, drum beats, and song structures are deeply meaningful to its audience, as corroborated by the robust discourse in punk zines.

Rebel Musics by Chris O'Leary, Rebel Rebel Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Rebel Rebel books, David Bowie: every single song. Everything you want to know, everything you didn't know. David Bowie remains mysterious and unknowable, despite 45 years of recording and performing. His legacy is roughly 600 songs, which range from psychedelia to glam rock to Philadelphia soul, from avant-garde instrumentals to global pop anthems. Rebel Rebel catalogs Bowie's songs from 1964 to 1976, examines them in the order of their composition and recording, and digs into what makes them work. Rebel Rebel is an in-depth look at Bowie's early singles and album tracks, unreleased demos, session outtakes and cover songs. The book traces Bowie's literary, film and musical influences and the evolution of his songwriting. It also shows how Bowie exploited studio innovations, and the roles of his producers and supporting musicians, especially major collaborators like Brian Eno, Iggy Pop and Mick Ronson. This book places Bowie's music in the context of its era. Readers will discover the links between Kubrick's 2001 and "Space Oddity"; how A Clockwork Orange inspired "Suffragette City". The pages are a trip through Bowie's various lives as a young man in Swinging London, a Tibetan Buddhist, a disillusioned hippie, a rock god, and a Hollywood recluse. With a cast of thousands, including John Lennon, William S. Burroughs, Andy Warhol and Cher.

Rebel Musics by Huey Morgan, Huey Morgan S Rebel Heroes Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Huey Morgan S Rebel Heroes books, The defining sounds of popular music - blues, rock 'n' roll, punk, hip-hop - were shaped and driven by rebel voices: whether that was Robert Johnson and Billie Holiday in the 1920-40s, or the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Joe Strummer in the 1960s and 70s. Truly ground- and rule-breaking voices have been drowned out by pop-by-numbers acts in more recent years, and in Rebel Heroes, Huey Morgan investigates where music started to lose its soul, and why the lessons of those renegade spirits of yesteryear are still so vital. The book is steeped in Huey's love for, and knowledge of, music and is full of personal anecdotes and stories of some of the greatest musicians to have graced us with their talent.

Rebel Musics by Lesley J. Pruitt, Youth Peacebuilding Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Youth Peacebuilding books, This book highlights the important role youth can play in processes of peacebuilding by examining music as a tool for engaging youth in such activities. As Lesley J. Pruitt discusses throughout the book, music—as expression, as creation, as inspiration—can provide many unique insights into transforming conflicts, altering our understandings, and achieving change. She offers detailed empirical work on two youth peacebuilding programs in Australia and Northern Ireland, countries that appear overtly peaceful, but where youth still face structural violence and related direct violence at the community level. She also pays careful attention to the ways in which gender norms might influence young people’s participation in music-based peacebuilding activities. Ultimately, the book defines a new research area linking youth cultures and music with peacebuilding practice and policy.
