Literacy And Motivation

Reading Engagement by Ludo Verhoeven, Literacy And Motivation Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Literacy And Motivation books, The central question in this volume is how to create a society of "engaged readers" in today's world, where reading is increasingly overruled by other media, such as television and personal computers. Engaged readers, as the term is used in this book, means readers who are socially interactive, strategic, and motivated. This state-of-the-art review contains research on integrating cognitive, social, and motivational aspects of reading and reading instruction, the chapter authors argue that coming to grips with the notion of engagement in literacy requires redefining literacy itself to acknowledge the degree to which it is not only a cognitive accomplishment, but a social activity and an affective commitment as well. Promoting literacy acquisition thus requires interventions that address attitudes and beliefs as much as those that assure cognitive changes in learners. Equally important, the authors posit that literacy engagement involves the integration of cognitive strategies and motivational goals during literate activities. This necessary link between literacy and motivation is addressed from a variety of perspectives. Acknowledging the value of cross-national and cross-cultural comparisons, the book features chapters on the promotion of literacy in different regions around the world.

Handbook Of Reading Research

Reading Engagement by Rebecca Barr, Handbook Of Reading Research Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Handbook Of Reading Research books, A comprehensive overview of important contemporary issues in the field of reading research from the mid 1980s to mid 1990s, this well-received volume offers readers an examination of literacy through a variety of lenses--some permitting microscopic views and others panoramic views. A veritable "who's who" of specialists in the field, chapter authors cover current methodology, as well as cumulative research-based knowledge. Because it deals with society and literacy, the first section provides the broadest possible view of literacy. The second section defines the range of activities culturally determined to be a part of the enterprise known as literacy. The third focuses on the processes that individuals engage in when they perform the act of reading. The fourth section visits the environment in which the knowledge that comprises literacy is passed on from one generation to the next. The last section, an epilogue to the whole enterprise of reading research, provides apt philosophical reflection.

Effects On First Graders Independent Reading Engagement Using Readers Workshop

Reading Engagement by Allison E. Elliott, Effects On First Graders Independent Reading Engagement Using Readers Workshop Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Effects On First Graders Independent Reading Engagement Using Readers Workshop books, "The purpose of this 6-week action research study was to find out how first grade students could become active and engaged readers during independent reading time. The study was also designed to investigate the use of student feedback in learning new strategies. The research questions included: How do I engage students in reading during independent reading time? How can I help students become more involved in their reading during independent reading time? Implemented in a Title I school, the readers' workshop program consisted of weekly mini-lessons on five reading strategies, independent reading time, and partner and whole-class sharing. Qualitative and quantitative data collected included a field journal, pre- and post-intervention questionnaires, independent reading engagement observations, reading partnership contracts, debriefing discussions, and student interviews. Results indicated that students' were engaged in their independent reading during readers' workshop through learning to use different reading strategies and partner and whole-class sharing."--Abstract, p. 1.

Building Communities Of Engaged Readers

Reading Engagement by Teresa Cremin, Building Communities Of Engaged Readers Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Building Communities Of Engaged Readers books, Reading for pleasure urgently requires a higher profile to raise attainment and increase children’s engagement as self-motivated and socially interactive readers. Building Communities of Engaged Readers highlights the concept of ‘Reading Teachers’ who are not only knowledgeable about texts for children, but are aware of their own reading identities and prepared to share their enthusiasm and understanding of what being a reader means. Sharing the processes of reading with young readers is an innovative approach to developing new generations of readers. Examining the interplay between the ‘will and the skill’ to read, the book distinctively details a reading for pleasure pedagogy and demonstrates that reader engagement is strongly influenced by relationships between children, teachers, families and communities. Importantly it provides compelling evidence that reciprocal reading communities in school encompass: a shared concept of what it means to be a reader in the 21st century; considerable teacher and child knowledge of children’s literature and other texts; pedagogic practices which acknowledge and develop diverse reader identities; spontaneous ‘inside-text talk’ on the part of all members; a shift in the focus of control and new social spaces that encourage choice and children’s rights as readers. Written by experts in the literacy field and illustrated throughout with examples from the project schools, it is essential reading for all those concerned with improving young people’s enjoyment of and attainment in reading.

Improving Reading Engagement In Middle School Students

Reading Engagement by Lynsey Cutting, Improving Reading Engagement In Middle School Students Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Improving Reading Engagement In Middle School Students books, There is a decline in reading engagement as students go from first to sixth grade, causing many middle school students to be reluctant readers (McKenna, Kear, & Ellsworth, 1995). Reluctant readers spend significantly less time reading than their engaged peers, causing them to fall behind (Stanovich, 1986). This project examines the reading engagement problem by identifying strategies that have been shown to increase engagement. The strategies make up an outline for a middle school elective course that will increase reading motivation. The theoretical framework for this project is Rosenblatt’s (2005) transactional theory of reading and writing, and draws much from the idea that reading is a transaction between the text and the reader.
