Explorations In Jewish Historical Experience

Explorations In Jewish Historical Experience by Shmuel Noah Eisenstadt, Explorations In Jewish Historical Experience Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Explorations In Jewish Historical Experience books, Professor S.N. Eisenstadt has written numerous essays on Jewish Identity over the years. This volume brings together some of these. The major argument of the essays follows the Weberian view of Jewish historical experience as that of a distinct civilization, as a distinct Great Religion, the first monotheistic civilization - without, however, accepting many of Weber's concrete analyses.

Transnationale Geschichte

Explorations In Jewish Historical Experience by Gunilla Budde, Transnationale Geschichte Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format.

J Dische Religion In Deutschland

Explorations In Jewish Historical Experience by Eva-Maria Schrage, J Dische Religion In Deutschland Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format.

Sociological Knowledge And Collective Identity

Explorations In Jewish Historical Experience by Stavit Sinai, Sociological Knowledge And Collective Identity Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Sociological Knowledge And Collective Identity books, Sociology, emerging in the 19th century as the study of national societies, is the intellectual product of its time, power relations and social imaginaries. As a discursive practice that was enmeshed in the meta-narratives of modernity, the discipline of sociology bears the inherent capacity to shape socially shared concepts and construct collective identities. This book examines the relationships between sociology and projects of national identity construction, and presents a critique of Shmuel N. Eisenstadt, the prominent Israeli sociologist known as the "father of Israeli sociology". The book focuses on Eisenstadt’s sociology of Israel as a case of knowledge construction within an ideological system and examines the relationships between his various sociological analyses of Israeli society and the Zionist imaginary, namely the deeply entrenched political myths and historiographical narratives that constitute Israel’s hegemonic national identity. By emphasizing the interrelation between textuality, identity, and loaded language, the volume seeks to demythologize Eisenstadt’s sociology of Israel. Three major concepts in Eisenstadt’s scholarship are specifically thematized: integration, civilization, and modernities. In each of these foci, the author shows how Eisenstadt’s sociological conjectures reproduce dominant Zionist historiographical representations of the past, rationalize prevalent social hierarchies, reify the boundaries of a national collective "Self", and render legitimacy to Israel’s governing ethnocratic tendencies, underlying the premises of the Zionist settler-colonial project. Sociological Knowledge and Collective Identity will appeal to those interested in the interconnectedness of sociology and political memory, as well as in a radical postcolonial reconstruction of sociology.

Connecting Histories

Explorations In Jewish Historical Experience by Gemma Romain, Connecting Histories Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Connecting Histories books, The dynamics of ethnicity, diaspora, identity and community are the defining features of contemporary life, giving rise to important and exciting new interdisciplinary fields of study and literature on subjects that were previously seen as the exclusive domain of the social sciences. Connecting Histories is an important contribution to this trend. While using sociological and anthropological theories, it is an innovative historical and comparative assessment of ethnic identities and memories. Romain investigates the ways in which 'communities' remember their experiences, focussing on Afro-Caribbean and Jewish individuals and groups in Britain. By examining life histories and 'autobiographical acts' including autobiography, oral history and travel writing, it assesses the ways in which mythologies affect collective memory and personal identities. Key themes include the memories of migration and myths of the Mother Country and Promised Land, the re-remembering of racist riots in early twentieth century Britain, and reflections on community and diasporic identities. The value and originality of Connecting Histories lie in the juxtaposition of two communities - Afro-Caribbean and Jewish - which have many parallels in historical experience, but have rarely been compared to each other. This important study contributes significantly to the understanding of ethnicity, identity and diasporic communities worldwide. Book jacket.

Mit Beiträgen von: Thomas Schwinn, Shmuel N. British Jewry Zionism And The Jewish State 1936 1956

Explorations In Jewish Historical Experience by Stephan Wendehorst, British Jewry Zionism And The Jewish State 1936 1956 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download British Jewry Zionism And The Jewish State 1936 1956 books, Stephan E. C. Wendehorst explores the relationship between British Jewry and Zionism from 1936 to 1956, a crucial period in modern Jewish history encompassing both the shoah and the establishment of the State of Israel. He attempts to provide an answer to what, at first sight, appears to be a contradiction: the undoubted prominence of Zionism among British Jews on the one hand, and its diverse expressions, ranging from aliyah to making a donation to a Zionist fund, on the other. Wendehorst argues that the ascendancy of Zionism in British Jewry is best understood as a particularly complex, but not untypical, variant of the 19th and 20th century's trend to re-imagine communities in a national key. He examines the relationship between British Jewry and Zionism on three levels: the transnational Jewish sphere of interaction, the British Jewish community, and the place of the Jewish community in British state and society. The introduction adapts theories of nationalism so as to provide a framework of analysis for Diaspora Zionism. Chapter one addresses the question of why British Jews became Zionists, chapter two how the various quarters of British Jewry related to the Zionist project in the Middle East, chapter three Zionist nation-building in Britain and chapter four the impact of Zionism on Jewish relations with the larger society. The conclusion modifies the original argument by emphasising the impact that the specific fabric of British state and society, in particular the Empire, had on British Zionism.

Hebraism In Religion History And Politics

Explorations In Jewish Historical Experience by Steven Grosby, Hebraism In Religion History And Politics Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Hebraism In Religion History And Politics books, Hebraism in Religion, History, and Politics is an investigation into Hebraism as a category of cultural analysis within the history of Christendom. Its aim is to determine what Hebraism means or should mean when it is used. The characteristics of Hebraism indicate a changing relation between the Old and New Testaments that arose in Medieval and early modern Europe, between on the one hand a doctrinally universal Christianity, and on the other various Christian nations that were understood as being a 'new Israel'. Thus, Hebraism refers to the development of a paradoxically intriguing 'Jewish Christianity' or an 'Old Testament Christianity'. It represents a 'third culture' in contrast to the culture of Roman or Hellenistic empire and Christian universalism. There were attempts, with varying success, during the twentieth century to clarify Hebraism as a category of cultural history and religious history. Steven Grosby expertly contributes to that clarification. In so doing, the possibility arises that Hebraism and Hebraic culture offer a different way to look at religion, its history, and the history of the West.

Israel Celebrates

Explorations In Jewish Historical Experience by Hizky Shoham, Israel Celebrates Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Israel Celebrates books, Israel Celebrates is about the intersection where Israeli inventiveness and Jewish tradition meet: the holidays. It employs the anthropological history of four Jewish holidays as celebrated in Israel in order to track the naturalization of Jewish rituals, myths, and symbols in Israeli culture throughout "the long twentieth century" of Zionism and on to the present, and to demonstrate how a new strand of Judaism developed in Israel from the grassroots. But could this grassroots Israeli culture develop into a shared symbolic space for both Jews and Arabs? By probing the political implications of the minutiae of life, the book argues that this popular culture might come to define Jewish identity in Israel of the 21st century.

Civilizations In World Politics

Explorations In Jewish Historical Experience by Peter J. Katzenstein, Civilizations In World Politics Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Civilizations In World Politics books, A highly original and readily accessible examination of the cultural dimension of international politics, this book provides a sophisticated and nuanced account of the relevance of cultural categories for the analysis of world politics. The book’s analytical focus is on plural and pluralist civilizations. Civilizations exist in the plural within one civilization of modernity; and they are internally pluralist rather than unitary. The existence of plural and pluralist civilizations is reflected in transcivilizational engagements, intercivilizational encounters and, only occasionally, in civilizational clashes. Drawing on the work of Eisenstadt, Collins and Elias, Katzenstein’s introduction provides a cogent and detailed alternative to Huntington’s. This perspective is then developed and explored through six outstanding case studies written by leading experts in their fields. Combining contemporary and historical perspectives while addressing the civilizational politics of America, Europe, China, Japan, India and Islam, the book draws these discussions together in Patrick Jackson’s theoretically informed, thematic conclusion. Featuring an exceptional line-up and representing a diversity of theoretical views within one integrative perspective, this work will be of interest to all scholars and students of international relations, sociology and political science.

Ideas Of Race In The History Of The Humanities

Explorations In Jewish Historical Experience by Amos Morris-Reich, Ideas Of Race In The History Of The Humanities Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Ideas Of Race In The History Of The Humanities books, This volume is concerned with the hitherto neglected role of the humanities in the histories of the idea of race. Its aim is to begin to fill in this significant lacuna. If, in the decades following World War II and the Holocaust – years that witnessed European decolonization and the African-American civil rights movement – the concept of ‘race’ slowly but surely lost its legitimacy as a cultural, political and scientific category, for much of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century concepts of race enjoyed widespread currency in numerous fields of knowledge such as the history of art, history, musicology, or philosophy. Bringing together some of the most distinguished scholars in their respective fields, this is the first collective attempt to address the history of notions of race in the humanities as a whole.
