The Sanctuary Of Demeter And Kore Book Description

by Nancy Bookidis, The Sanctuary Of Demeter And Kore Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Sanctuary Of Demeter And Kore books, This volume continues the publication of excavations conducted by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in the Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore on Acrocorinth. It incorporates two bodies of material--Greek lamps and offering trays. The lamps include those made from the 7th through 2nd centuries B.C., together with a few Roman examples not included in Corinth XVIII.2. They served to provide light and to accompany the rites of sacrifice. The offering trays differ from the liknon-type offering trays published by A. Brumfield; they support a variety of vessels rather than types of food and had a symbolic function in the Sanctuary rituals. They are extremely common in the Sanctuary and only rarely attested elsewhere.

The Sanctuary Of Demeter And Kore Book Description

by Ronald S. Stroud, The Sanctuary Of Demeter And Kore Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Sanctuary Of Demeter And Kore books, Excavations conducted by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in the Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore on Acrocorinth, 1961-1975, produced more than 170 inscribed objects of stone, bronze, and bone, as well as lead weights, mosaics, dipinti and graffiti on pottery, clay pinakes, and magical lead tablets. All of the inscriptions in this volume are transcribed, and the author relates them to an overall interpretation of the activities, secular and religious, attested in this shrine during its long period of use from the 7th century B.C. until the end of the 4th century A.D. Where possible, the author also draws out their implications for and contribution to the history of ancient Corinth, the worship of the goddesses Demeter and Kore, and the practice of magic, especially in the Roman period. This is the final publication of all the inscribed objects from the sanctuary, excluding stamped amphora handles and loomweights, which will be included in a later fascicle.

The Sanctuary Of Demeter And Kore Book Description

by Sonia Klinger, The Sanctuary Of Demeter And Kore Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Sanctuary Of Demeter And Kore books, This volume presents the terracotta miscellaneous finds from the Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore at Acrocorinth. The finds comprise 21 classes, including protomes and masks, altars, plaques, models of various personal and household items, and loomweights and other textile tools (the latter initially studied by Gloria S. Merker and brought to publication by Nancy Bookidis). In addition to providing a catalogue of the finds arranged according to their subjects, the authors compare these finds with similar objects found elsewhere in Greece and refer to literary, epigraphical, and visual sources to understand their possible uses and meanings and the character of religious activity that may have triggered their dedication in the sanctuary. This volume will greatly facilitate comparative studies of ancient Greek miscellaneous finds and will be an important reference for historians of Greek art as well as of Greek religion.

Der Kult Von Demeter Und Kore Auf Sizilien Und In Der Magna Graecia Book Description

by Valentina Hinz, Der Kult Von Demeter Und Kore Auf Sizilien Und In Der Magna Graecia Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Der Kult Von Demeter Und Kore Auf Sizilien Und In Der Magna Graecia books, English summary: Pictures of human sacrifices as well as all kinds of acts of violence at holy places can be seen on numerous Etruscan burial monuments from the 4th to the 1st century BC. Although the repertoire of the pictorial themes is manifold, scenes were frequently taken from Greek mythology. This volume examines the encroaching interests which are associated with the presentations of Greek myths in Etruria. The result is that the burial monuments are evidence of a historical situation in which the Etruscan aristocracy cultivates its own religious heritage in order to be able to stand up against rising groups of people internally and to outwardly present themselves in the new centre of power in Rome as the upholder of venerable forms of the cult.

The Extramural Sanctuary Of Demeter And Persephone At Cyrene Libya Final Reports Volume Vi Book Description

by T. V. Buttrey, The Extramural Sanctuary Of Demeter And Persephone At Cyrene Libya Final Reports Volume Vi Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Extramural Sanctuary Of Demeter And Persephone At Cyrene Libya Final Reports Volume Vi books, Coins, for reasons that do not always make sense, are often treated by field excavators as more reliable chronological indexes than other classes of artifacts. This always makes their discovery a welcome event, especially when they are silver or gold, which tend to survive in the ground in a more recognizable state than their bronze counterparts. The Red Figure pottery does not have quite the same chronological relevance as the coins but does on occasion contribute to the dating of archaeological contexts. Its often high quality and interesting variety of shapes has already generated commentary elsewhere in addition to what is presented here. University Museum Monograph, 97

Demeter And Persephone In Ancient Corinth Book Description

by Nancy Bookidis, Demeter And Persephone In Ancient Corinth Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Demeter And Persephone In Ancient Corinth books, When the Roman tourist Pausanias visited Corinth around A.D. 160, he saw many shrines and buildings high up to the south of the city, on the slopes of Acrocorinth. This booklet describes excavations at one of these, the Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone (Kore). The details of religious rites revealed are of particular interest since the cult of the two goddesses, also celebrated at Eleusis, is one of the most mysterious in antiquity, and no literary testimony exists to explain what may have happened behind the high walls. Terracotta dolls, ritual meals of pork, and miniature models of food-filled platters hint at a vigorous religious tradition associated with human and agricultural fertility.
