The Ghost Feeler Book Description

by Edith Wharton, The Ghost Feeler Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Ghost Feeler books, Diagnosed with typhoid fever at age of nine, Edith Wharton was beginning a long convalescence when she was given a book of ghost tales to read. Not only setting back her recovery, this reading opened up her fevered imagination to "a world haunted by formless horrors." So chronic was this paranoia that she was unable to sleep in a room with any book containing a ghost story. She was even moved to burn such volumes. These fears persisted until her late twenties. She outgrew them but retained a heightened or "celtic" (her term) sense of the supernatural. Wharton considered herself not "a ghost-seer"—the term applied to those people who have claimed to have witnessed apparitions—but rather a "ghost-feeler," someone who senses what cannot be seen. This experience and ability enabled Edith Wharton to write chilling tales that objectify this sense of unease. Far removed from the comfort and urbane elegance associated with the author's famous novels, the stories in this volume deal with vampirism, isolation, and hallucination, and were praised by Henry James, L. P. Hartley, Graham Greene, and many others.

The Ghost Stories Of Edith Wharton Book Description

by Edith Wharton, The Ghost Stories Of Edith Wharton Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Ghost Stories Of Edith Wharton books, One might not expect a woman of Edith Wharton's literary stature to be a believer of ghost stories, much less be frightened by them, but as she admits in her postscript to this spine-tingling collection, "...till I was twenty-seven or -eight, I could not sleep in the room with a book containing a ghost story." Once her fear was overcome, however, she took to writing tales of the supernatural for publication in the magazines of the day. These eleven finely wrought pieces showcase her mastery of the traditional New England ghost story and her fascination with spirits, hauntings, and other supernatural phenomena. Called "flawlessly eerie" by Ms. magazine, this collection includes "Pomegranate Seed," "The Eyes," "All Souls'," "The Looking Glass," and "The Triumph of Night."

The Triumph Of Night And Other Tales Book Description

by Edith Wharton, The Triumph Of Night And Other Tales Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Triumph Of Night And Other Tales books, Throughout her career Wharton wrote ghost stories, and is a central figure within the genre in the twentieth century. When she collected many of her ghost stories together in Ghosts (1937) she put them under the 'special protection' of Walter de la Mare. Like him, she manages to evoke uncannily convincing atmospheres and characters, and in such stories as 'Afterward' the way in which the tale is told is so satisfying that one can only admire her craftsmanship. Wharton's collection Ghosts is described by E.F. Bleiler as a 'landmark volume in supernatural fiction', and to this we have been able to add a number of other tales of the supernatural, many of which will be unknown to her readers.

Sensation Stories Book Description

by Wilkie Collins, Sensation Stories Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Sensation Stories books, The "Sensation Novel" ushered in the modern mystery genre. It was inaugurated by Wilkie Collins's best-seller The Woman in White in 1860. But this collection, selected by Peter Haining, reveals that Collins had actually been writing realistic stories of suspense for at least a decade before this. With dramatic plots that revolved around hidden secrets, bloody crimes, villainous schemes, and clever detective work all occurring in everyday settings, Wilkie Collins helped to shape a new genre that was worlds away from anything being written by his contemporaries--and one that was to have a far-reaching influence. Sensation Stories ranges from Collins's earliest tales and those published under the auspices of his great friend Charles Dickens to the title piece from his last, melancholic collection. Among several famous yarns and stories not published for over a hundred years is one featuring a pioneer female detective and another that has been called the first British detective story. There is a ghost story controversial for its eroticism, the first humorous or satirical detective story and a story that clearly presages The Woman in White, published two years later. Thrilling reads in their own right, all 10 stories showcase Wilkie Collins's towering contribution to the development of the mystery genre. Indeed, he is now regarded as the inventor of the modern detective story and the forefather of a crime fiction tradition that runs through Arthur Conan Doyle to Thomas Harris today.

Lassie Book Description

by Peter Haining, Lassie Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Lassie books, Lassie's English creator, Eric Knight, drew on first-hand knowledge of 1930s' economic hardship and his collie dog Toots to write 'Lassie Come Home'. His magazine story about an impoverished family from the Yorkshire Dales forced to sell its beloved sheepdog to a Scottish landowner was to establish Lassie as 'the world's favourite dog'. Although MGM's film of 1943 made a star of Elizabeth Taylor, it also marked the rise to Hollywood stardom for the canine saviour with human intelligence. Lassie the dog was to feature in six more movies before transferring to US television in 1954. Her fame grew with every passing year, with one collie after another being recast in the role. Eric Knight, however, was not to share in Lassie's success. Tragically, in 1943, while travelling on a wartime intelligence mission, he was killed in a plane crash. Author Peter Haining also examines the history of the rough collie as a breed on both sides of the Atlantic.
